WYRD WAR proudly presents pioneering independent filmmaker Stephanie Rothman’s bizarre reimagining of the vampire mythos on the big screen at Portland's historic Hollywood Theatre for one night only! Boasting one of the most misleading ad campaigns of the freewheeling 1970s, THE VELVET VAMPIRE cleverly subverts the familiar horror tropes popularized by Universal and Hammer studios with a liberated bloodsucking matriarchal antihero, played with smoldering eroticism by Celeste Yarnell, who hunts her prey across the American desert in a dune buggy in full light of day! Michael Blodgett and Sherry Miles play a bumbling young couple seduced to the remote lair of the titular fiend, where they slowly begin to realize that they are the main more ways than one! Rothman’s beautiful and surreal directorial style paved the way for later experimental vampire films such as Bill Gunn’s GANJA & HESS and George Romero’s MARTIN, and has re-emerged in recent years to be canonized as a boldly comedic and beloved low budget cult classic. WYRD WAR proudly presents Norifume Suzuki’s epic “pinky violence” period piece SEX & FURY (1973)! A young woman, played with icy precision by Reiko Ike of the infamous "girl boss" franchise, witnesses her father’s assassination and sets out to exact methodical and very bloody revenge. Along the way, she gambles with a frequently undressed Christina Lindberg (THEY CALL HER ONE EYE), takes a very peculiar bath and plumbs the sleazy depths of Japan's Meiji era yakuza underground, hunting her father’s killers by their distinctive tattoos. For genre fans with a stomach for ultra-violence and hilariously absurd sexual situations, SEX & FURY is to LADY SNOWBLOOD what Lucio Fulci’s ZOMBIE is to DAWN OF THE DEAD. If you want blood…you got it! TICKETS ON SALE NOW!

WYRD WAR 3505 NE Broadway Street Portland, Oregon

FIRST POST OF THE DECADE! I started this blog in March 2006, so this year marks 14 years as a keyboard warrior.  All the scars are on the inside. You still with me? The last few weeks have been a whirlwind as I celebrated the single most amazing year of my life. Too much to get into now, but I would love to share some of the highlights at some later date. For now, it is my pleasure to cordially invite YOU to join me at WYRD WAR headquarters on Saturday February 1st from 7pm - 9pm for our grand opening of 2020! BEYOND SHAOLIN: KUNG FU MOVIE PAINTINGS FROM GHANA is an amazing collection of rugged hand-painted treasures from West Africa, showcasing seven different artists and nine original works from the prolific and mysterious master of Ghana mobile cinema, Mr. Brew! Four decades of celluloid martial arts mayhem celebrated across 15 massive flour sack canvases, spanning the golden age of the 1970s Shaw Brothers revival through the new jack wire-work warriors of the early 2000s! Two lethal styles of kung fu! 75 flying fists of fury! Everything available for purchase. Music by DJ Bestial Walrus. Booze by Wolf Spirit Distillery. This exhibition will be on display every weekend (and by appointment) through Sunday March 1st at 3505 NE Broadway Street in beautiful Portland, Oregon. See you at the gallery. “!”

"So you think your kung fu is good, huh?!?!"

WYRD WAR concludes our 2019 autumn soundtrack concert series with a very special screening of Lucio Fulci’s gory supernatural masterpiece THE BEYOND (1981), featuring live score and post-film concert by celebrated Italian composer FABIO FRIZZI! Tickets on sale HERE! Catriona MacColl is Liza Merril, a young New Yorker who suddenly inherits a mysterious hotel in a remote Louisiana bayou. A series of inexplicable accidents begin to occur after her arrival as Liza is drawn into a malefic labyrinth of terror, assisted by a blind entity who admonishes that her inheritance has been built over one of the Seven Gates of Hell! Hailed as the quintessential Fulci film, THE BEYOND boasts a fragmented narrative that is propelled toward its haunting conclusion by unhinged nightmare logic, macabre atmospheres, stylish New Orleans locations, unflinching depictions of graphic violence and, of course, the iconic music of Fabio Frizzi! Longtime Fulci cinematographer Sergio Salvati is at his gleeful best, zooming and lurking over every bizarre atrocity in this phantasmagorical epic of Italian horror cinema. Find out why Lucio Fulci once infamously remarked, “Violence is Italian art!”

Odessa Godoy, talented creator of the possessed rabbi doll featured in the HOLIDAY HELL installment titled 'The Hand That Rocks The Dreidel,' a fun reimagining of the Hebrew myth of the golem. Myth? Truth? Who knows?

The caption here sorta wrote itself.

Thank you to everyone who came to Wyrd War headquarters this past Saturday to celebrate the makers of HOLIDAY HELL! What a fun day (and night)! If you weren't able to come down and grab a DVD from the cast & crew, it is now streaming on Amazon and Tubbi. Ho, ho, homicide.

Join me at Wyrd War headquarters on Saturday November 23 from 3-5pm as we celebrate local independent horror filmmaking with cast and crew from the fun new Pacific Northwest anthology HOLIDAY HELL (2019). Director Jeff Ferrell and others from his creative team will be in attendance to sign DVDs and showcase gory props from the film as we imbibe traditional holiday culinary fare. This event is FREE. Guests are encouraged to bring a small dish or snack to share (think Thanksgiving)...or just come get stuffed on our homemade mashed potatoes and tofurky while you take in the puppetry design of Portland artist Odessa Godoy and the soundtrack work of composer Semih Tareen! This is also a great opportunity to see our latest display of amazing Ghana mobile cinema paintings before the November show comes down! Ho Ho Ho. You’re dead.

Chewing bubble gum and kicking ass.

Alan Howarth at Wyrd War headquarters.
Your funeral, my trial.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our double sold out presentations of John Carpenter's THEY LIVE on 35mm featuring Academy Award winning composer and sound designer Alan Howarth! More than 700 resistance fighters put on their glasses and came out to support the WYRD WAR (no need to start eating that trashcan). Very special thanks to my friends at the Hollywood Theatre who were willing to work late so we could accommodate an 11:00pm encore performance and, of course, my dear friend Alan Howarth for taking us to inner-space...and back. Next up is Wyrd War's very special presentation of Lucio Fulci's definitive gore epic THE BEYOND with composer Fabio Frizzi performing his beautiful score live on stage at the Hollywood Theatre (plus concert after the film). Only about 100 tickets remaining for that one, so GET YOUR TICKET NOW! We sleep...They Live.

Saturday, October 19, 2019

Thank you, Portland! Wyrd War's 7:30pm screening of John Carpenter's THEY LIVE on November 1, 2019 sold out in less than 24 hours. We added an encore 11pm show, and that sold out too. That is more than 700 white-knuckled resistance fighters willing to put on the glasses and get woke!

Academy award-winning composer/sound designer ALAN HOWARTH is our special guest for the evening. Howarth will perform a full concert after the film, featuring a medley of beloved soundtrack hits spanning his entire career, including ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, CHRISTINE, PRINCE OF DARKNESS, the ongoing HALLOWEEN franchise and many more!

ABOUT THE PRINT: In 2017, a Universal Studios archivist discovered a random canister of film in the vault that appeared to have never been shipped out for public viewing. He soon realized this was a mislabeled “lost" print of THEY LIVE circa 1988! Since its discovery, this truly rare and pristine gem has only been projected twice...until now! Hope you got your tickets. See ya November 1.

Claudio and Bruno pointing out Dario Argento's accidental reflection in the window of this scene in Suspiria during soundcheck. I've seen Suspiria probably 20 times since the 80s and never noticed this before!

Meet & greet at the Wyrd War gallery.

Claudio signed my beautiful print of this Conquest poster art by the Ghanaian mobile cinema artist Leonardo.

Claudio had never seen this rare 1978 Dawn of the Dead board game by SPI Games that is part of our current exhibit at the Wyrd War gallery.

Scenes from the projection booth.

384 stabbing shards of glass can't be wrong.

I don't always act like an Italian opera queen, but when I do it's on stage with Claudio Simonetti! Thank you A.K. Wilson for capturing the spirit of the night in a single photo.

"If you had told 15 year old me that someday I'd be up here on stage introducing one of my absolute cinematic musical heroes...I probably would've been less cranky in high school!" Hey Portland! Thanks for showing up and giving me the night of my life last week! We sold out The Hollywood Theatre in less than 24 hours...back in July...for our screening of Dario Argento's DEEP RED (1975) featuring Claudio Simonetti's Goblin performing live! Special thanks to everyone who purchased meet & greet tickets and joined us at the Wyrd War gallery for a very intimate evening with the maestro and his band. It was an incredible experience for all involved and I can't thank Claudio enough for being the most humble and gracious musician I've ever had the pleasure of hosting! Next up in my autumn cinematic soundtrack concert series is John Carpenter's THEY LIVE (1988) featuring Academy award-winning composer Alan Howarth live in concert after the film! Our 7:30pm performance sold out in 24 hours, so we added an encore 11pm show! Get your tickets now
