Claudio and Bruno pointing out Dario Argento's accidental reflection in the window of this scene in Suspiria during soundcheck. I've seen Suspiria probably 20 times since the 80s and never noticed this before!

Meet & greet at the Wyrd War gallery.

Claudio signed my beautiful print of this Conquest poster art by the Ghanaian mobile cinema artist Leonardo.

Claudio had never seen this rare 1978 Dawn of the Dead board game by SPI Games that is part of our current exhibit at the Wyrd War gallery.

Scenes from the projection booth.

384 stabbing shards of glass can't be wrong.

I don't always act like an Italian opera queen, but when I do it's on stage with Claudio Simonetti! Thank you A.K. Wilson for capturing the spirit of the night in a single photo.

"If you had told 15 year old me that someday I'd be up here on stage introducing one of my absolute cinematic musical heroes...I probably would've been less cranky in high school!" Hey Portland! Thanks for showing up and giving me the night of my life last week! We sold out The Hollywood Theatre in less than 24 hours...back in July...for our screening of Dario Argento's DEEP RED (1975) featuring Claudio Simonetti's Goblin performing live! Special thanks to everyone who purchased meet & greet tickets and joined us at the Wyrd War gallery for a very intimate evening with the maestro and his band. It was an incredible experience for all involved and I can't thank Claudio enough for being the most humble and gracious musician I've ever had the pleasure of hosting! Next up in my autumn cinematic soundtrack concert series is John Carpenter's THEY LIVE (1988) featuring Academy award-winning composer Alan Howarth live in concert after the film! Our 7:30pm performance sold out in 24 hours, so we added an encore 11pm show! Get your tickets now

Wyrd War proudly presents Charles Bernstein’s haunting score for Sidney Furie’s controversial supernatural thriller THE ENTITY (1982) for the first time ever on glorious vinyl! To celebrate this historical soundtrack release, we are bringing a rare 35mm print of THE ENTITY to The Hollywood Theatre for one night only on Saturday August 24, 2019! Tickets on sale now

Based on the novel of the same name, which in turn was based on the real-life case of a woman believed to be the victim of a violent spectral invasion, THE ENTITY is a provocative and genuinely unsettling descent into complex trauma and the demoralization that often emerges in the aftermath of rape. Barbara Hershey’s brilliant performance as a single mother seeking assistance from both a skeptical psychiatrist and a bumbling team of paranormal researchers is amplified by Bernstein’s iconic musical cues (more recently heard in Quentin Tarantino’s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS). They simply do not make ghost movies like this anymore. If THE ENTITY does not reduce you to a pile of awestruck primal dread, you might want to call your therapist. We will have copies of the soundtrack available in the lobby before the film. This one is strictly limited to 666 numbered copies and is already nearly sold out in pre-sales, so if you wish to order ahead of time visit the online Wyrd War store.

Only brick and mortar is real.

Greydon Clark and his partner Marlene relaxing in the Wyrd War lounge.

Tales From The Summer Bummer.

The Doom That Came to Doomtown.

THANK YOU to everyone who joined us for our Wyrd War gallery launch meet & greet and Summer Bummer Double Feature with legendary writer, producer, actor, director Greydon Clark! We could've listened to his hilarious tales of low budget filmdom all night and, well...we did! Thanks to everyone at the Hollywood Theatre for making us feel right at home and thanks to our sponsor for this very special occasion, Blood Sweat Tears vodka from Eugene, Oregon. Very special thanks to Greydon Clark and his lovely partner Marlene for everything. We will return next year - deep in the heart of summer - to celebrate the craft of filmmaking with another surprise directorial guest. In the meantime, come see us at our new headquarters located at 3505 NE Broadway in beautiful Portland, Oregon where we have a rotating permanent display of Ghanaian movie poster paintings that is guaranteed to blow your mind.

Wyrd War invites you on a white-knuckle joyride through the bizarre world of exploitation cinema with director Greydon Clark in attendance to discuss 30 years of independent filmmaking!

WITHOUT WARNING (1980): A malevolent extraterrestrial hunts humans through a remote US town in this innovative sci-fi gem. Featuring a spectacularly unhinged Martin Landau, grimacing Jack Palance and towering Kevin Peter Hall, who went on to hunt Schwarzenegger in a remarkably similar film in 1987.

SATAN’S CHEERLEADERS (1977): A sketchy high school janitor prowls campus for a virgin to be sacrificed by the local coven (as one does), but the tables turn in this outrageous occult sex romp. Gratuitous bouncing up and down ensues and appearances are made by Yvonne De Carlo, John Carradine and John Ireland. Clark’s horny classic arrived in theaters on the crest of “satanic panic” quickies, and makes its infernal return just in time to beat the summer heat!

Come on down to the coziest bar in northeast Portland this Friday and baptize yourself in the neon slime with a potent black magic brüe of deep horror devotionals, biker dirges, devilish gospel, headbanging anthems and an unhealthy dose of Roky Erickson. All vinyl. Never a cover. Friendliest bartenders. No attitudes. Break your chains.

We're celebrating my birthday in style on June 1 with a rare 35mm screening of Abel Ferrara's gritty black comedy THE DRILLER KILLER (1979) at Hollywood Theatre! A frustrated artist becomes unhinged while struggling to pay his bills (sound like anyone you know?) and hold things together for his roommate and her strung-out girlfriend. When an annoying new wave band called The Roosters moves in next door...he finally snaps! What happens next landed this sleazy slice of guerrilla New York City filmmaking on the UK's infamous "video nasties" list along with 39 other films that were successfully prosecuted for violence under the Obscene Publications Act. You will laugh, cry and/or scream in terror. Just don’t say you haven’t been warned. The Driller Killer is coming. Tickets on sale NOW.

Kiss the goat! the goat.

But don't eat the painted goats!

THANK YOU to everyone who joined Wyrd War for our Fourth Annual Walpurgisnacht Celebration on April 30, 2019 at the historic Hollywood Theatre, especially our brother in arms Joe Preston for fortifying the ritual. HAGAZUSSA was perfectly unsettling on the very big screen with surround sound speakers, a capacity audience and Meadow's delicious rosemary shortbread goat cookies for everyone! Many of you have written to us asking for the recipe, so I've included that below. We were also informed this morning that our Tuesday night event exceeded nationwide ticket sales, including theaters that screened HAGAZUSSA for a full week. Such is Portland's passion for fantastic cinema, including the dark and occasionally challenging programming that Wyrd War has come to be known for locally. Special thanks to all of our friends at the Hollywood Theatre for everything they do. Lastly, a very warm salute to emerging director Lukas Feigelfield, brilliant cinematographer Mariel Baqueiro, all at Raven Banner Entertainment, Music Box Films, and the entire HAGAZUSSA team for their bold and beautiful accomplishment.

Rosemary Shortbread Cookies
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and 2/3 cup of sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in the flour salt and rosemary until well blended. The dough will be somewhat soft. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/4" thickness. Cut into the shape of your infernal master (alternately, if you're a "no gods, no masters" sorta baker, cut into any shape you like) about 3" x 3" inches in size. Place cookies 1" apart on the lined cookie sheets. Shortbread dough can be a bit crumbly so don’t be discouraged.
  • Bake for 8 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden at the edges. Do not over bake! Cool on wire racks, and store in an airtight container at room temperature. Shortbread ages well so your cookies will be most tasty two days after preparation. Enjoy!
